Backpack traveling is an ever increasing trend for people of all different ages. It can help you travel across the world, but without the headache of lugging around suitcases to all of your destinations. Many might ask, how do I know what to include in my pack? So, here is a list of 10 essential items to get you started while backpacking.

Map and Compass

Depending on what kind of traveling you are doing, it is always a great idea to bring a map and a compass with you. If you are in an unfamiliar area this can help you stay on the route you had planned and can help when people offer directions for you.

Lockable Travel Backpack and Padlock

If you are staying in a hostel or even just camping out in the wilderness, it is important to have a lockable travel backpack as well as a padlock. Many hostels around the world will give you access to a locker or a safe to put your belongings in, you want to make sure that you can lock it up for any inconvenience along the way. Having a lockable backpack is also important for the items that you will keep on your person. Theft isn’t too common in most parts of the world, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Sleeping Bag Liner

Depending on where you are staying throughout the world, you may not have the luxury of having sheets for your accommodation. Bringing a sleeping bag liner with you can solve this problem. And even if you are provided sheets for a bed, it may be wiser to use your own since you know the cleanliness of them.

First Aid Kit

Traveling can sometimes be dangerous, and minor injuries do happen from time to time. Having a first aid kit with packed along with you can help in these situations.

Headlamp

No matter if you are staying in a hostel or staying out in the wild, having a headlamp is an essential backpacking item. It can help you find your belongings at night and in a way that you aren’t disturbing others in the process.

Water Bottle (Hard or Flexible) And a Water Filter

Water is essential to life and important to stay healthy during your travels. Depending on what kind of traveling you are doing, having a hard or flexible water bottle is essential. A water filter is a must as well. Not everywhere you go will have access to clean water, so bringing your own water filter will give you access to drinkable water no matter where you are.

Travel Adapter

Outlets and plugs are different in just about every country around the world. If you are taking electronics with you like your phone or a laptop, having a travel adapter will make your life easier. This will provide you with the necessary equipment to keep your electronics charged and ready to use no matter what country you are in.

Travel Towel

Having a lightweight and quick-drying travel towel will make travel much easier. Many hostels will not give out towels to their guests so bringing your own is smart. Regular towels often are too bulky and take forever to dry. You are going to be on the move a decent amount, so packing a towel that dries quickly will help you start your day faster.

Packing Cubes

The last item on this list is packing cubes. Packing cubes can help you keep your backpack organized and easier to travel with. Each cube can be used for a different category of clothing, so you always know where the clothing that you want is. It will also keep your bag organized by breaking your pack down into sections.
