Visiting Egypt

Egypt captures the traveler’s imagination, unlike any other destination. The country is best known for the ancient culture that produced the pyramids—structures that continue to amaze and surprise researchers. Yet there is much more to the country than its pyramids. If you plan to visit the country one day, take a look at the below information. It will help you plan your travel itinerary.

Pyramids of Giza

The most popular pyramids to visit are the Pyramids of Giza. They are also one of the oldest tourist attractions in the world—ancient Greeks and Romans wrote about the pyramids. The largest pyramid in the area is called the Great Pyramid of Khufu. For thousands of years, the pyramid was the largest structure built by humans. Inside of the pyramid researchers have found at least three chambers. Not far from the Great Pyramid of Khufu, visitors can see the Great Sphinx of Giza. Researchers aren’t sure what the structure is supposed to represent, who built it, or what its original name was. The name sphinx is a reference to the Greek myth. Luxor

The city of Luxor is famous for its ancient temples and monuments. During ancient times the city was known as Thebes. The Valley of the Kings is located close to the city. For hundreds of years, Egyptian royalty was buried in the area, including the famous King Tutankhamun. If you are interested in mummies, then you should visit the Mummification Museum. The museum displays a number of mummies and discusses the mummification process. Another attraction that can’t be missed is the Luxor Temple. The temple is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cairo

Cairo, Egypt’s capital, is the country’s most famous city. Due to its close proximity to the ancient pyramids, for most of the twentieth century, it was the country’s most popular tourist destination. However, since the 2011 revolution tourism has fallen dramatically. On one hand, this means that you can visit the pyramids without crowds and for lower prices. On the other hand, though, the threat of terrorism is something that can’t be ignored. One of the best museums in the city is the Egyptian Museum. Inside you will find ancient artifacts from pharaohs, mummies, and treasure. The museum is packed with so many artifacts that it can be difficult to explore everything, so be prepared to take your time.
